SMILE, God Loves You: Be mine
I would much rather have a fresh cut wildflower wrapped in the palm of a loved one than a bouquet of roses held neatly together by a price tag. Entertain me with a meaningful conversation on a random night while enjoying MoonPies and sipping bottled Coke. If we happen to be watching our diets, we may feast on time until we are full of laughter.
It is not that I dislike well-known celebrations preprinted on calendars. Quite the contrary. It is more that I believe every day is worth celebrating. I do not need commercialism to coax me into considering one day to be more appraised than another. There is a day far more cherished than all the other dates on the calendar. TODAY.
Today is the only space in which we are capable of living, loving, and learning. Our breath only extends from inhale to exhale… it cannot slip into yesterday’s doings or lift the veil of tomorrow.
I am a fan of active love. Love that is more than preprinted sentiments on a six-dollar greeting card. I am an ardent believer in year-round “just because” gifts. Little doings laced with effort can show that you like or love someone (perhaps both) — sending an encouraging letter, text, or email: making a phone call to check on someone or even a pot of coffee to share; paying a visit or paying forward a kindness; praying for someone specifically and fervently and giving your time and talents to bless another with no expectation of anything in return.
“Just because” gifts often become personalized tokens that one cashes in-memory year after year.
If Jesus were walking the Earth today in the flesh, I would not put it past Him to send His version of a personalized Valentine. I imagine Jesus going door-to-door, knocking. Any person who opens unto Him would hear His saving message: “BE MINE.”
“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
Whether we observe Valentine’s Day or not, may we choose to be reminded and celebrate the unfailing love of Jesus Christ – an invitation to be His for eternity. May we be more assured of His plan than our own, trusting the greatest love story ever written (the Bible) to be living evidence that true love never dies. Jesus was crucified for our sins and resurrected to redeem us from death, gifting by grace eternal life with His Father - Love Himself.
“…God is love” (1 John 4:8).
What specifically will you “just because” do TODAY to love another as Jesus loves?
What are you holding onto that you need to trust and hand over to Jesus TODAY?
SGLY, dear reader.
