A solid performance on both ends of the court by the Eagles’ varsity squad propelled them to a 61-49, home victory over the McKinney Boyd Broncos in District 9-6A (II) action Jan. 31.

The ballgame displayed moderate scoring by both teams through the first two quarters of play. Prosper picked up 12 total points in the first quarter, while the strong Eagles’ defense held Boyd to single digits with only nine points of production. The second didn’t see a large rise in action, with the Eagles scoring 11 points and the Broncos raking in 10 points. However the steady offense by the Eagles allowed them to take a slim 23-19 lead over Boyd going into halftime.

Boyd stumbled hard in the third quarter, only accumulating five total points in the quarter. This gave Prosper a golden opportunity to extend its lead and run away with the ballgame. It did so with a 16-point quarter to put them up 39-24.

Putting Boyd in a hole they’d be unable to climb out of - despite a valiant effort to do so in the fourth quarter, where Boyd had a fantastic 25-point quarter to cap off their evening. Unfortunately for the Broncos, Prosper was able to mostly keep pace, scoring 22 points of its own in the closing minutes of play, giving the game its final score and Prosper its third straight district win.

Neal Utrup had a stellar game for the Eagles, going 5-9 from the field, sinking 3-4 from behind the arch, and going 1-2 from the free throw line for a total of 20 points on the night. Ammon Allen also put up solid numbers for Prosper, going 2-5 from the field, 2-4 from deep downtown, and 2-4 from the free throw line for a total of 12 points toward the Eagles victory.
