The Prosper Eagles finished the regular season with a dominant 58-27 home victory over the Plano Senior Wildcats.

Prosper didn’t start scoring as fast as they often do, but once they did, the flood gates opened. Plano, with a trip to the playoffs on the line, attempted a late comeback but fell well short of a win.

Senior running back JT Lane led the charge for the Eagles with four rushing touchdowns and 170 yards on 20 attempts. He eclipsed 1000 yards on the season midway through the third quarter.

Junior quarterback Jackson Berry completed 14 of his 21 pass attempts for 235 yards and two touchdowns, including one to his senior lineman, University of Texas commit Jake Majors. Berry also rushed for 3 yards and a touchdown.

Junior receiver Cameron Harpole was the Eagles’ leading receiver with four receptions for 73-yards and a touchdown. Senior Hayden Metcalf caught three passes for 45 yards, and sophomore Ryan Threat caught one pass for 52 yards.

Junior kicker Brad Larson converted all seven of his extra-point attempts and all three of his field-goal tries.

After both teams’ first drives stalled out, Prosper started their second possession from their 37-yard line. It seemed as if they had nothing going, but Berry took advantage of a Plano penalty that awarded a free first down. He threw back-to-back strikes to Tyler Bailey and Harpole for 17 and 36 yards, respectively. After the explosive play to Harpole, he faked a sweep and lobbed a pass across the width of the field to Majors, who caught the pass and laid down a defender as he crossed the goal line.

Just before the end of the first quarter, the Eagles forced Plano into a turnover on downs, and when play resumed, Prosper was off to the races. They marched 77 yards in five plays, and Lane found the end zone for his first touchdown of the game.

Prosper held Plano to a three-and-out, giving their offense excellent field position. Two explosive plays later, Bailey’s 36-yard jet sweep and Lane’s 24-yard scoring rush, Prosper extended their lead to three touchdowns.

Plano attempted to punt, but a high snap caused a 37-yard loss and a turnover on downs at their 9-yard line. Berry lofted a pass to the right corner of the end zone, and with a defender in his face, Harpole leaped over the cornerback and hauled it in.

Prosper’s offense started their next drive from near midfield due to their defense stonewalling Plano once again. Berry, while rolling left, looked to his right and lofted a pass to Threat for 51 yards. Lane split through the middle of the defense and scored from 9 yards out for his third touchdown of the quarter.

Down 35-0, Plano was finally able to piece together a drive and get themselves on the scoreboard with a 25-yard touchdown rush. Prosper answered with a pair of back-to-back field goals just before halftime, the second of which was made possible because of a strip-sack by senior Jorden Miles and a fumble recovery by junior James Eckrote.

Plano opened the second half with a 68-yard touchdown drive that shortened Prosper’s lead to 41-13, and the Eagles answered with a 60-plus yard drive of their own. Berry lowered his shoulders and snuck through the line to put his team up by 35 again.

After a huge kick return by Plano, the Wildcats scored again, this time from a 32-yard pass on the first snap of the possession. Prosper responded by methodically driving the field before Lane scored from 14 yards out to extinguish Plano’s comeback hopes.

Larson hit his third field goal of the day, his second from 26 yards, to put the lid on Prosper’s win. Plano scored on their final possession of the game, but it was just consolation for the Wildcats as they lost by 31 points.

Prosper’s victory lifts them to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in district competition. It also prevented Plano from making the playoffs, marking the first time since 1989 that none of the three major Plano public schools qualified for the postseason.

The Eagles begin playoffs on the road this week against the Wylie Pirates (6-4, 6-1), District 10-6A’s second-place team. Both squads are 1-1 against common opponents. The Pirates lost 31-10 to Jesuit at home but defeated Rowlett 14-13 in an away game, while Prosper lost 41-14 to Jesuit on the road but crushed Rowlett 31-7 in the first game at Children’s Health Stadium.

Wylie is a tough team to plan for because they use two quarterbacks, and they switch them often. Senior Mason Lang has most pass attempts for the team and is more careful with the ball, but McElroy has more explosive plays and is a dual-threat quarterback.

As a team, Wylie averaged 167 passing yards and 135 rushing yards per game while scoring just over 24 points. Their defense allows 281 yards and 21 points per game. The Eagles’ high-octane offense averaged 198 passing yards, 222 rushing yards and almost 38 points per game. Their defensive numbers are inflated slightly because of two bad losses but Prosper still allows just 18 points and 256 yards per game.

Game time for is set for 7 p.m. at Wylie Stadium in Wylie.
