McKINNEY — The Prosper girls soccer team is headed to the area round after defeating Frisco, the third seed from district 13-5A, 2-0, in Thursday night’s bi-district match-up at McKinney High School.

“It was a very physical game,” head coach Rafael Flores said. “[Frisco] was big and physical.”

Despite the size difference, the Lady Eagles were ready to play from the start. Senior Kat Rogers put Prosper on the board just 15 minutes into the match after freshman Natalie Smathers took a hard fall in the box. Rogers easily converted the penalty kick for the early lead.

Later in the first half, the Lady Eagles doubled their lead behind Caroline Havard’s finish inside the box. After a long cross, the sophomore stepped up and punched home the bouncing ball past the Frisco keeper.

Defensively, the Lady Eagles were impenetrable, holding Frisco’s most talented offensive threat, Olivia Klein, to a minimum on the attack. Although the Lady Raccoons (10-6-3) carried their physical style of play throughout the match, Prosper played tough.

“The biggest positive was the win. The first one is always tough, and Frisco was a solid team,” Flores said. “We were happy to keep the shutout. Multiple goals and a shutout are always a recipe for success.”

Now sitting at 23-1-1, Prosper now prepares for another difficult match against the Wylie East Lady Raiders (15-5-2), who advanced with a 2-1 victory over Sulphur Springs, which takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, at Ron Poe Stadium in McKinney.

“We are just happy to be able to practice again and look ahead to Tuesday’s matchup with Wylie East. We don’t want to take anything for granted,” Flores said.

The Lady Eagles will rely heavily on their senior leadership going forward. Rogers’ penalty kick conversion was her 16th goal of the year, which leads the team, while Kristin Knipe’s play on the outside is a valuable asset.

Defensively, both Peyton Jefferson and Maycie McDougal continue to anchor in the back with their veteran experience.

Prosper’s youth will also play a hand in the team’s postseason success. Freshmen Kaitlyn Giametta and sophomore Caroline Havard have both been great additions to the Lady Eagle attack, combining for 23 goals this season.

Additionally, sophomores Reese Cross and Lauren Lapomarda provide the final pieces to the strong Prosper back line.
