WOODSBORO — Last year, it was two points. It was four points this year.

Neither margin of defeat is really any easier for the San Diego Lady Vaqueros, especially since the four-point loss to the Odem Lady Owls in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals Tuesday night means the end of a remarkable run this season.

The two South Texas high school basketball powerhouses took turns trading rallies Tuesday night. Odem went out in front in the first period. They outscored San Diego, 13-4, in the first.

The Lady Vaqueros came back with a 14-8 run in the second. San Diego was down, 21-18, at halftime. Odem again went in the third and lead, 33-25, going into the fourth.

San Diego again battled back, but just like last year, they came up short despite outscoring the Lady Owls by four in the period.

With the win, Odem moves on to the Class 3A, Region IV tournament in Sequin. Ode is playing Lago Vista at 8 p.m. Friday.

The Lady Owls are 31-6 for the season.

For San Diego, their season ends at 28-8. The Lady Vaqueros are graduating a talented senior class which was led by Marley Martinez, Leandra Bazan and Leanna Vela, who were four-year starters. In that time, San Diego won four-straight district titles and had three-straight undefeated runs in district play.
