The Eagle Soccer varsity opened their 2014 campaign with a 2-1 win in last night’s annual alumni game. With alumni from as far back as the graduating class of 2009, this year’s varsity squad faced a tough opponent.
The game opened with the team showing patience in possession, though struggling to create opportunities. The alumni team used high pressure tactics to force some miscues that kept things at a 0-0 stalemate heading into halftime. After the break, the varsity made a couple of tactical changes that quickly paid dividends.
An Eagle midfielder calmly headed home after a perfect cross from the left flank to stake a 1-0 lead.
The alumni team continued to battle, but the varsity soon found another goal after a nice interchange between an overlapping right back and the center striker. The game appeared to be all but over when the alumni pulled a goal back to make the score 2-1 for the final five minutes. Although they tried to tie the game, the varsity Eagles were able to hold on f or a 2-1 win.
"Overall the game was very competitive and a great way to start the season," said head coach Ryan Rogers.
