From Staff Reports

With a 61-49 win over Centennial last week, the Eagles basketball team earned the second place spot in the district. Prosper also opened up the first round of district play Monday night with a 61-51 win.

Cameron Martin led the Eagles with 21 points in the win over Centennial and 20 points in the playoff win.

The second-place finish meant that the Eagles had to face Mesquite Poteet High School in the first round of the playoffs Monday night. Coming into the game Eagle coach Jonathan Ellis described the Pirates as "long and athletic." But the Eagles jumped out to an early 17-6 lead after one quarter making it hard for the Pirates to play catch-up.

"[I’m] super proud of how the kids prepared this past week and the focus they brought to the game tonight," Ellis said after the game. "Going from last place to bi-district champions in just one year is a credit to all the hard work and dedication our players have put in day in and day out."

Ellis said the hard work helped put the Pirates on the ropes after the first quarter. "All the hard work and preparation put into our practices paid off in huge dividends getting out of the gate early and securing the 17-6 lead. Being new to the playoffs, I was worried we may come out tight and/or nervous, but these kids continue to impress me with their determination."

The win was a big one for the program. It was the first playoff win for the Eagles since a win over Kennedale in 2010.

Next up for the Eagles will be the winner of the Dallas Lincoln and Seagoville game that was scheduled for Tuesday night [after the Prosper Press print time]. As the area’s No. 9 team, Lincoln is expected to win that game. Lincoln has been in the playoffs for 25 consecutive years.

Ellis had this to say: "In early scouting of Lincoln, we have noticed they are a very athletic team that plays really well together."

The game will probably be played on Friday. For more information, check out the Prosper ISD website at
