Prosper’s Kenny Thacker started touring professionally with a blue-grass music group at 11 years old. He officially "retired" from the music business several years ago but earlier this year, he put out another album. This Saturday night at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, Thacker will show off some of those songs along with some Grammy-winning musicians.

Originally from Kentucky, Thacker grew up on blue-grass music. He started playing guitar when he was 6. By 11 he was part of his Uncle Ray’s band, The Slone Family. Playing with the group led him to the across the country, including the stage at the Grand Ole Opry.

A couple of years ago, Thacker began work on his current album, "On The Front Porch." It was released earlier this year. He said the music on the album is a mostly a mix of his grandpa’s faorite songs.

"There are a couple of orginal songs, but mostly it’s old traditional songs that were my grandpa’s favorite tunes. The whole album is a tribute to him," Thacker said.

"On the Front Porch" contains 12 songs, most of which Kenny learned on the front porch of his grandpa’s house. The music, Thacker said, has often brought mountain people joy and hope. He calls it a "sparkling persistence to carry on, oftentimes in spite of bleak circumstance."

Thacker quit the music business to work as a full-time minister. He is the president of SoundWord, a ministry organization that assists church leaders. He speaks at conferences across the United States. But while he doesn’t make his living playing music anymore, he still plays concerts one or two times a month, he said.

"I don’t do it for a living. I do it for fun."

Joining Thacker on stage Saturday night will be a least of grammy-award winning musicians, who still travel around with country stars and blue-grass musicians.

Clay Hess, will the play guitar (Hess played with Rick Skaggs for years); Irl Hees, plays the upright bass; Tim Crouch, plays fiddle (just finished a new record with country music superstar Alan Jackson); Ron Block, banjo and guitar (multiple Grammy awards and guitar player for Allison Krauss for years).

The concert is Saturday night, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, is located at the corner of Prosper Trail and Custer Road. For more information, visit
