From Staff Reports

The Lady Eagles opened their season this past Thursday when they took part in the Lawn America Prosper Invitational. Both the JV and Varsity teams competed in the tournament, which included teams from all over the state.

The varsity opened the tournament against PCA and then follow with El Paso Riverside and Royse City.

The Thursday morning game against PCA kicked off the tournament and saw a Lady Eagle team looking to start the season off on the right foot. The Lady Eagles controlled most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the break. The Lady Eagles seemed to be in control, but PCA would fight back and tie the game with 12 minutes left. That goal would wake up the Lady Eagle offense as they would explode for 4 goals in the final minutes to take the game 5-1.

Thursday night matched the Lady Eagles against an unknown El Paso Riverside school. The Lady Eagles made sure to send a statement in the game and jumped on El Paso early. After taking a 4-0 lead into the half, the Lady Eagles would tack on three more in the second half and dominate every facet of the game.

Friday brought Royse City and the opportunity to take first place in Prosper’s group. Although Prosper controlled the first half, they could not find the back of the net.

After regrouping at halftime, the Lady Eagles would get off to a quick start in the second half. Two early goals in the half would be enough to take the game as well as first place in Group A. The win would set Prosper up in a semifinal showdown against Rockwall Heath.

Saturday morning brought better weather and some better opponents. Rockwall Heath stood in the way of a place in the championship game. The Lady Eagles once again spent most of the first half attacking Heath, but couldn’t quite find the back of the net. Prosper would regroup yet again at halftime and look to solve the Heath defense.

Prosper picked up where they left off, relentlessly attacking the Heath defense. After some hard work the Lady Eagles would pop in two quick goals and take command of the game. Heath would not give up and ended up scoring a goal in the closing minute to cut the lead in half. Prosper would hang on and reach the final of their tournament for the fourth straight year.

In the final, Prosper would match up with a familiar foe. A year after beating Lake Dallas 1-0 in this same tournament, Prosper knew they’d be in for a tough match. Lake Dallas’ size would play a key part in the game, and Prosper would have to match the intensity of their opponent.

Prosper spent most of the first half attacking Lake Dallas, but as in previous games, was unable to find a goal. Halftime had two tired teams tied at zero. Prosper made adjustments, regroup, and look to take home some hardware.

Prosper maintained their attack on Lake Dallas, but still struggled to put the ball in the back of the net. Time started to dwindle and the game looked destined for penalty kicks.

In the closing moments, Prosper found some space down the right side and send a dangerous ball into the Lake Dallas box. A Lady Eagle beat her defender and slip the ball in past the Lake Dallas keeper. The goal gave the Lady Eagles the game and the championship.

With the win, the Lady Eagles made it three straight championships in the Lawn America Prosper Invitational. The final win gave the Lady Eagles a 5-0 record to start the season and momentum heading into their game against Little Elm on Tuesday at PHS.
