DALLAS – The Prosper Eagles opened their Class 5A Region II final series against the Forney Jackrabbits with an 8-1 victory at Dallas Baptist University on Thursday, May 31, and moved one victory away from advancing to the state tournament.

The Eagles (36-7) got off to a hot start at the plate and used a couple of early errors to take a 3-0 lead over the Jackrabbits (26-13) after one inning.

Kendall Foster had an RBI triple to bring in the first run of the game and that was followed by two more runs scoring on a throwing error.

Prosper head coach Rick Carpenter said that striking early in the game was crucial to help build confidence against Jackrabbits’ starting pitcher Mason Englert, who has signed with Texas A&M.

“It was huge,” Carpenter said. “Their kid is a possible draft pick. For us to take it to him in that first inning was a big accomplishment and I give my kids credit for having good at-bats.”

Prosper starter Conner Jackson threw a complete game for the Eagles and gave up just one run in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson allowed his defense to work behind him with just one strikeout but Forney never really had many chances to get on the scoreboard.

“He did a great job,” Carpenter said. “He’s been pitching great all year long. He did exactly what we expected out of him and more. Great competitor.”

Prosper’s bats came alive again in the fifth inning as Dawson Zey, Luke Johnson and Jax Alley all came up with RBI on the way to four more Eagles runs. Zey and Johnson each had RBI singles that Alley followed up with a two-run double to make it a six-run lead for Prosper.

Ryland Kerby drove in the lone Forney run and Englert finished his night with six strikeouts in five innings of work in the loss.

Game two between Prosper and Forney will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night at Dallas Baptist. If Forney wins, a deciding third game for the Region II title will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Dallas Baptist.
