McKINNEY – The Prosper Eagles opened the playoffs with a sweep of Frisco Cetennial, holding on for a 5-4 victory on Friday, May 4, after starting the series with a 5-1 victory on Thursday, May 3, at McKinney Boyd.
Prosper will take on Sulphur Springs in the area round this week.
Centennial had a chance to force a winner-take-all Game 3 when it loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and had a two-out, two-run double to pull within a run. But the Eagles secured the final out and the series victory to advance.
Jacob Cosner tripled twice and drove in three runs for the Eagles, who led 4-2 before an RBI single by Kendall Foster in the fourth.
Centennial threatened to close the gap with a pair of runners in both the fifth and sixth innings but Prosper maintained its three-run advantage, which proved crucial after the Titans’ rally in the seventh.
In the Game 1 victory, Dawson Zey paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with a home run and five RBI, Braden Webb was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Foster tripled, walked twice and scored and Jaxon Alley doubled.
Braden Carmichael earned the victory by allowing an unearned run on five hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
In the top of the first, Foster tripled to right with two outs and Zey followed with a single to put Prosper on the board.
Zey made it 4-0 in the third with a three-run homer to left. Conner Jackson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Webb reached on a single when he bunted. After an out, Zey crushed the first pitch he saw over the wall.
A two-out rally in the fourth gave Prosper a 5-0 advantage. Webb singled and Foster walked before Zey singled to left.
Centennial didn’t have a runner get into scoring position against Carmichael until the Titans scored their run in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff single and an error put runners at the corners before Prosper traded the run for a double play.
