CORPUS CHRISTI — After 10 innings of some pretty tight baseball, it was a basehit single which decided the 30-5A North Zone showdown between Alice and Gregory-Portland Friday night at Whatburger Field in Corpus Christi.

Kyle Zipprian drove in the winning run for the Wildcats in the bottom of the 10th inning.

The Wildcats were leading the game, 2-1, until the top of the sixth inning with Pete Beltran hit a ball into the outfield to score Matt Saenz from third. The run tied the game and eventually sent into extra innings.

R.J. Garcia was 3-for-5 with a walk. Beltran was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Alice freshman Jacob Guzman started on the mound for Alice. He threw six good innings, giving up two runs off five hits and three walks. He struck out four batters.

He was relieved by freshman Isai Campos in the seventh. Campos gave up two hits, three walks and a run.

Alice continues its 30-5A North Zone schedule Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home game against Calallen.
