GRANBURY — After a succesful start to the 2018 Spring season, the Prosper High School girls varsity golf teams headed back to the green on over the weekend. The teams competed in the Lady Pirate Spring Invitational at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club in Granbury.

Unlike most of the tournaments this year, the team had the luxury of great weather over the weekend, making it a much more enjoyable experience and better playing surface for the golfers.

Both the Varsity I and Varsity II teams had big performances, competing against some of the best teams in the area. The Varsity I finished the tournament with their best score of the year, shooting a 332 on day one, followed by a 341 on the second day for a two-day total of 673. The results were enough for a 2nd place overall finish in the invitational.

Individually, all of the golfers had stand-out performances. Freshman Haili Moore finished in 5th place, while Emily Pantig-Nystrom followed closed behind in 8th. The sophomore poseted her personal best two-day total of the season.

“[She] continues to improve and impress with each tournament,” Head girls coach Elizabeth Hamilton said.

Victoria Buelow, Caroline Weatherly and Sierra Topper all posted season best scores in the tournament. Topper had a great finish as she holed out from 80 yards on par 4 number 6, giving her an Eagle on day two

“[That’s] a very exciting and rare event in golf,” Hamilton said.

The Varsity I full results were as follows:

Haili Moore - 78, 77 (155)

Emily Pantig-Nystrom - 78, 81 (159)

Victoria Buelow - 86, 91 (177)

Caroline Weatherly - 90, 92 (182)

Sierra Topper - 95, 97 (192)

The Varsity II competed in the same tournament, finishing with a two-day total of 842 - 417 on day one, and 425 on day two. Maddy Huxford had a great finish to the tournament after taking a nine on her first hole to shoot a 92. Carlie Tinslee, Ally Schnagl, and Brooke Rogers also had promising two-day totals in their varsity debut.

The full Varsity II results were as follows:

Maddy Huxford - 92, 101 (193)

Ally Schnagl - 107, 103 (210)

Carlee Tinsley - 112, 102 (218)

Brooke Rogers - 106, 115 (221)

With so many positive highlights, Coach Hamilton said she was very pleased with the results.

“I am so happy that the hard work the girls have been putting in is starting to pay off,” she said. “Several players tried a different mental approach to their rounds, focusing on staying positive and on the shot in front of them rather than hanging on mistakes or pressing for a score.”

The change in mentality is not only helping the girls perform better as well, but also helping the program make strides towards a District Championship.

“It definitely was the difference in their rounds and and our success as a program at this tournament,” Hamilton said. “I’m proud of the growth that I’m seeing this spring and am excited to see us heading toward the goals we set back in August.”

With the district tournament looming in the near future, the team has a few more tournaments to prepare. The Varsity I will be back on the green April 2-3 at Frisco Lakes, while Varsity II will be back in action this Thursday, March 8 at the Creeks course at Indian Creek. Both teams will reunite at the Sky Creek Ranch on March 23-24.
