PROSPER — The Prosper softball team held on a two-run lead until Plano scored six runs over the last three innings in Prosper’s 6-3 loss in non-district action on Monday, Feb. 26.
Two two-run homers, one in the top of the sixth inning and one in the top of the seventh, gave the Lady Wildcats their lead plus a couple insurance runs.
Senior pitcher Rachel Eckrote started the game for the Lady Eagles. She made it through five innings and gave up two runs, only one earned. She did rack up the strikeouts much like her previous outing, adding eight more.
However, she also walked eight batters, running up her pitch count to 127.
“The umpire had a small zone last night, and I tell all of my pitchers that you have to adjust to the umpires zone,” Prosper head coach Staci Jackson said. “We know that we have something to work on this weekend to prepare us for district next week, and that is to cut down on walks.”
Junior pitcher Marisa Mejia got the loss after throwing the two innings and giving up the final four runs to the Wildcats. Mejia gave up four runs on six hits. She walked no one and struck out three.
Skylar Phillips, Lexie Bell and Marina Karnes each had multi-hit games, all going 2-for-3.
“When girls believe that they can hit and go up to the plate with confidence that in turn increases their confidence which leads to quality at-bats,” Jackson said. “Offensively I believe we will only continue to get better and better.”
Prosper had a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when, with one out, Phillips singled to short, Bell doubled to center and then Karnes drove in both on a single to center.
After Plano took a 4-2 lead in the top of the sixth, the Lady Eagles cut their deficit in half on Bell’s two out single to right that scored Carli Smith, who was courtesy running for Mejia after she had walked with one out.
