LITTLE ELM — For the second game in a row, the Prosper High School boys soccer team was down a goal and staged a two-goal comeback to find the win.
The team got the 2-1 road win over Little Elm on Friday, Feb. 23, but not without a great deal of adversity.
“It’s always tricky playing teams twice in a couple of weeks, as you are both familiar with one another,” head coach Ryan Rogers said. “The Lobos had prepared a good game plan for us, and they gave us fits by clogging the middle of the field and not allowing us time to turn and find our attacking players.”
That game plan paid off early for Little Elm, as they notched a lead on a set piece. The continued pressure from the Lobo offense gave Prosper difficulties for the remainder of the half, as the team tried to adjust and find an answering goal. They would head into the half down and in a need of a new strategy.
After a bit of regrouping on the sideline, the halftime break rejuvenated a struggling Prosper offense, who came out moving the ball around the field ready to attack.
The Eagles found an equalizer from none other than sophomore Alex Vartabedian, who has a been an offensive force for the team all season. With a bit of skill, the sophomore sent a cross into the box for junior Kason Mullins to knock home.
With the mounting pressure of penalty kicks looming in the near future, Prosper saddled up for what would be an exciting finish. With less than five minutes to play, the Eagles were awarded a corner kick that Mullins fired into the box. The floating ball found a familiar forehead in senior Xander Shelton, who headed home the game winner for the second game in a row and sealing the 2-1 victory for Prosper.
“This team is mentally tough and willing to fight for each other,” Rogers said about the comeback win. “The guys believe in themselves and each other, and they believe in what we do. They know that if they never quit and keep fighting, that any game can be won.”
Shelton’s goal was his sixth of the season, while Mullins added his fourth goal and team-leading seventh assist. Vartabedian now has 3 assists to add to his stat line.
Now 8-0 in district (15-1 overall), Prosper will look to continue their eleven-game winning streak on Tuesday, Feb. 27 in the first stretch of their two-game Carrollton swing. They will take on Newman Smith at home before heading to Carrollton for a rematch against an eager RL Turner squad on Friday, March 2.
“We are just looking to be consistent this week,” Rogers said ahead of week five’s matchups. “It’s important for the team to focus on each game and not get caught looking too far ahead.”
