As the competition gets tougher and the stakes get higher, Prosper wrestling hasn’t flinched one bit.
The Prosper boys wrestling team finished first among 59 competing schools at the Region 2-5A championships. Meanwhile, the Prosper girls finished in sixth place. Overall, Prosper is sending 10 individuals to the 5A state meet.
State qualifiers on the boys side included the following athletes: John Richardson, Igor Costa, Caden Mills, Tommy Flaherty, James Wujek, David Bonds and Tristan Baugher. As for the girls, state qualifiers included Cristiana Williams, Juliana Baugher and Alyssa Alvarez. Celilia Adams was named a state alternate.
Alyssa Alvarez made history, becoming the first three-time regional champion in school history. Caden Mills (152 pounds) and Tommy Flaherty (160 pounds) each were champions as well in their respective weight classes.
The Prosper boys won by a wide margin, accumulating 176 points. Frisco Centennial and Frisco Liberty rounded out the top three at 139.5 points and 127.5 points, respectively.
Prosper wrestling looks to cap off a historic season on the biggest stage at the UIL State Championships on Feb. 23-24 at The Berry Center in Houston.
