The Stephenville boys basketball team posted a 55-33 road victory over Venus Friday night in District 8-4A action, maintaining their third-place spot in the standings.
Skylar Stilwell led coach Bill Brooks’ Jackets in scoring with 19 points, and Mason Holstein added 10.
The Jackets improved to 6-2 in district, tied with Waxahachie Life School for second place, and trailing first-place Midlothian Heritage (8-0). Life School fell to Heritage on Friday, 75-57, for its second district loss.
Heritage is ranked No. 11 and Life is No. 13 in this week’s Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
The Jackets held the Bulldogs to just 26 percent shooting on the night Friday, while hitting 55 percent on their end. The Bulldogs also missed 16 of their 22 free throw opportunities, while SHS was 5 of 11 at the line.
The Jackets held a 37-20 margin in team rebounding, led by Blake Aragon with 14. Aragon also posted a team-high seven assists.
After posting a slim 14-13 scoring edge in the opening quarter Friday, the Yellow Jackets’ defense limited the Bulldogs to single-digit scoring in each of the next three periods.
SHS outscored Venus 9-5 in the second quarter for a 23-18 halftime advantage. The Jackets enjoyed a 15-8 scoring edge in the third quarter, and 17-7 in the fourth.
The boys and the girls teams play at home tonight versus Heritage.
The next varsity boys game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday in Alvarado (1-6). After playing at home against Godley on Feb. 6, the Yellow Jackets will get their second shot at Life School, Feb. 9, also at home, in the final game of the regular season.
