SAN DIEGO — It was exactly the back-and-forth the of battle San Diego and Cotulla expect everything they meet.

However, the San Diego Lady Vaqueros were the better team Tuesday night, and when they had the opportunity, they pushed through and captured a win in the District 31-3A opener, 48-42.

The Lady Vaqueros had a 15-14 lead after the first period, but Cotulla played the role of aggressor early in the second and took the lead. They threatened to pull away late in the quarter, but San Diego always managed to hang on. The Lady Vaqueros came back one on a timely Marley Martinez three-pointer. Another time, just before halftime, San Diego retook the lead following a three-pointer by Lianna Vela followed by a steal and a pull-up jumper by Leandra Bazan.

San Diego held Cotulla to only four points in the fourth quarter while the built a 37-32 lead.

The Lady Vaqueros maintained their lead in the fourth behind six points by Bazan.
