The Prosper boys and girls basketball teams, each ranked No. 6 in the 5A state rankings, grinded out wins against McKinney North on the road in the first doubleheader of the district schedule on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
The girls (19-3) opened the afternoon slate with a come-from-behind 65-56 win. After struggling on offense and falling behind seven points in the first quarter, the Lady Eagles stormed back with a big third quarter, outscoring McKinney North 17-8. Prosper then finished the game on a 16-7 run,
The Lady Eagles relied on Mackenzie Hewitt down the stretch — she scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter. Hewitt stayed aggressive throughout the game, getting to the free throw line consistently and hitting 9 of 14 shots from the stripe. Jordyn Oliver led the team in scoring with 24 points on 12-for-21 shooting from the field.
The boys team (18-2) followed with a 51-39 win over McKinney North, fueled by junior point guard Josh Davis. He finished with a team-high 17 points and shot 3-for-4 from the three-point line, all while adding six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
As a team, Prosper benefited from good outside shooting all night, going 6-for-11 from deep. Taveion White dominated down low, making all four of his shots to go with seven rebounds. Zach Wrightsil filled up the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds and five assists.
Next up is a home doubleheader for both teams against The Colony on Friday, Jan. 5. Tipoff is at 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys.
