PROSPER - Weeks after the State volleyball championship, the 5A champions of Prosper High School are still being recognized across the DFW Metroplex.
Last night, the team was featured in sports block at the WFAA studio in Downtown Dallas. The girls visited with sports reporter Joe Trahan about their season and all the many accomplishments of the 2017 year.
“We go the invitation earlier last week,” Kauffman said. “The girls were great. They asked lots of questions about how they do things in the studio. I thought that the girls interviewed quite well.”
In addition to a state title, the team racked in individual player awards and district superlatives. Prosper secured four of the six main awards:
Haley Killinger — Offensive Player of the Year
Kayla Martin — Libero of the Year
Madi Whitmire — Setter of the Year
Ciera Hecht — Utility Player of the Year
Three players were named to the First-Team All-District, and two players made the Second-Team:
In addition, three student athletes were named to the Honorable Mention list:
Not only did the team turn heads in the district awards — they also found their way onto numerous national and regional radars as well.
Whitmire was tabbed the 2017 5A Setter of the Year award by the Texas Association of Volleyball Coaches. She and Hecht were also named to the 5A All-State tournament team.
The championship also put Prosper on the map nationally. The team was named as one of the top 10 teams in America, securing spot number 10.
While the team still beaming from all the spotlight, Kauffman said she already ready for next season.
“It was fun — of course I’m proud of the girls, but honestly I’m ready to celebrate them one more time at the banquet this week and then get started with prepping for next fall.”
