Junior Jordyn Oliver scored a season-high 29 points as the Prosper girls basketball team defeated Guyer 77-53 in Denton on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
The Lady Eagles led by five points at halftime but quickly built a big lead after the break thanks to Oliver’s play on both ends of the floor. She racked up three steals and scored 14 points in the third quarter, including five consecutive baskets.
“Whenever she wants to, she can go score,” Prosper head coach Trey Rachal said. “She led us and everyone else took suit and started knocking shots down.”
Every shot for Prosper seemed to go in from that point on, especially from beyond the arc. Senior Mackenzie Hewitt and sophomore Maddie Cleary each finished with 16 points and four three-pointers.
Rachal and company have come to expect big things from Hewitt, one of only three seniors on the team this season. In contrast, it was a breakout performance for Cleary, a player ready to take on a bigger role compared to last season.
“I remember watching her in eighth grade thinking (Cleary) was going to be a great shooter for us,” Rachal said. “She’s starting to become the player we know she can be.”
Prosper outscored Guyer 47-28 in the second half, improving to 3-0 this season. The Eagles previously earned wins over Lewisville (58-50) and Argyle (46-39).
Next up for the Eagles is the Allen Tourney, hosted from Thursday, Nov. 16 to Saturday, Nov. 18. Prosper’s first game tips off Thursday at 9 a.m.
