The Prosper cross country team had nine runners qualify for state at the 14-5A Region II Meet on Monday, Oct. 23 at Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie.
The Eagles boys team placed fourth out of 23 schools, while the girls finished fifth. Previously, the Prosper boys and girls teams took first place finishes at the District 14-5A meet.
The girls competed in the 3,200-meter run, while the boys ran in the 5,000-meter. Senior Emily Patterson finished eighth and sophomore Tatum Castillo finished 19th — both good enough to become individual state qualifiers. Patterson’s performance was second among seniors, while Castillo was fifth among sophomores.
On the boys side, seven runners qualified for state. Senior Sam Rizzo placed in sixth among 178 runners with a time of 16 minutes and 13 seconds, good for the second-best time among all seniors. Wyatt Landis, Alex Velez, Nicolas Guererro, Adam Schofield, Leon Valdman and Hamilton Burdett also qualified for state. Each runner on the Prosper boys team finished in the top 50 percentile with times under 18 minutes.
Head coach Jennifer Gegogiene and the Eagle runners will now look to make history at the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
