The Lady Sluggers, a 12-and-under youth softball team sponsored by My Batters Box based in Prosper, recently completed their first season of competition.
The team formed with the help of coaches Travis Lavallee, Keith Wigginton and Terry Bejeck in February and played nearly 50 games in a little more than three months. All but one player on the Lady Slugger’s roster is from Prosper or McKinney.
“We were looking for an opportunity to advance our daughters’s softball careers, so we decided to start a team ourselves,” Lavallee said. “After talking with Tina Muir at My Batters Box, they agreed to be our sponsor. Our goal all along was to keep it local.”
They have played in multiple tournaments around the Dallas area this year, most recently going 3-2 at the Swing Into Summer IGSL tournament in Frisco that ended on June 26. The Lady Sluggers previously placed third at a tournament in Allen and second place at Frisco in May.
According to Lavallee, the team has improved mightily compared to games each player participated in before the Lady Sluggers were founded. No stats are recorded during gameplay, but he said plenty of positive comments have come his way in the second half of the season.
“The team was night and day,” Lavallee said. “We have parents from opposing teams saying how much better we’ve gotten. It was pretty awesome to see.”
Lavallee’s daughter Hayllee and Wigginton’s daughter Ella are both members of the Lady Sluggers. Lavallee also coaches his younger daughter Lillee Kate on a separate 10-and-under team.
Each team is hoping to grow and continue to improve in the future. The Lady Sluggers won 20 games this spring, which wasn’t good enough for a winning overall record. Still, Lavallee considers their first season a huge success.
“The main thing we’re trying to accomplish now is to build a team and keep the same girls on the roster,” Lavallee said. “There’s a lot of movement in softball, but our goal is to retain as many as possible and to keep building on success.”
The last tryouts for the 10-and-under team will be held Saturday, July 15. To sign up, email coach Lavallee at firstname.lastname@example.org.
