ROCKWALL — The boys and girls golf teams concluded their season this week after competing in the Regional Tournament on April 26 at Rockwall Golf and Athletic Club. Both teams qualified for the tournament after winning district earlier in the month.
The girls team kicked off the week on Monday, battling against some tough competition including Highland Park, Lovejoy and Lakeview. The Lady Eagles took 10th place overall out of 16 teams. Emily Nystrom led the team, carding a final score of 89, while senior Mackenzie Floyd ended her career with a score of 91.
“It was a good learning experience since we are pretty young golf-wise,” coach Elizabeth Hamilton said in an email. “We expect to come back much stronger next year.”
The boys team had to be a little more patient during the week, as heavy Texas storms prevented the golfers from competing. After a four-hour delay, the team hit the green to vie for a spot in the state championship. Senior Graham Hutchinson continued to perform well, despite the sludgy conditions, and carded at team-leading 76. The Eagles were just three strokes short of third place (the state-qualifier minimum) at the conclusion of day one. Despite the course’s improved conditions, Prosper was unable to overcome the deficit and finished in sixth place — just eight strokes short of a state tournament appearance as a team.
Hutchinson did win second place individually, finishing regionals with a two-day score of 149. He will represent Prosper at the state tournament as a medalist on May 22-23 at Wolfdancer Resort in Austin, Texas.
