CARROLLTON — After defeating the 2016 5A State Champions Frisco Centennial on Tuesday in the Regional Quarterfinals, the Lady Eagles turned their attention to their next game against Mansfield Legacy in the Regional Semifinals.

Prosper 5, Mansfield Legacy 1

The sunny weather created the perfect atmosphere for a solid match up against two quality teams. The home team and opponent, Mansfield Legacy Lady Broncos, entered the Regional Semifinals with an overall record of 17-4, beating Joshua 2-0 in double overtime in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Legacy kicked off in the first, but Prosper immediately went on the attack.

“We knew how well this team was gonna play against us … we knew that we were going to have to come out and play our best,” senior Mo Ordonez said.

Both teams tried to find a rhythm, as the possession went back and forth between the two. Prosper showed early signs of scoring after a minor scramble inside the Legacy box, but it was cleared out. The Lady Broncos exploded in a quick counter attack, but goalkeeper Haley Birmingham was able to make the quick save. Midway through the half, senior midfielder Katie Lapomarda swiped the ball from an advancing Legacy attacker and played a through ball into sophomore Diana Ordonez. The forward swiftly touched around the goalkeeper and passed the ball easily into the net.

The Lady Eagles looked to increase the lead, but it was Legacy who retaliated with a countering goal. After a free kick that went askew, the Lady Eagles failed to clear away the ball, allowing a Legacy forward to pounce on the free ball and chip Birmingham for the equalizer.

“I think (the goal) woke us up a lot — we got all together and realized that we needed to pick up our game,” Mo Ordonez said.

It didn't take long for Prosper to bounce back, however, after junior Kat Rogers sent a curling free kick from 35 yards out into the box. For the second game in a row, senior Mo Ordonez headed in the ball to reestablish the Prosper lead, and the Lady Eagles never looked back. With 11 minutes remaining, they went on the attack after a ball was sent to Diana Ordonez from the defense. Ordonez looked up to find a running Hailey Davidson, and calmly slipped the sophomore a perfectly weighted ball through the defense. Davidson effortlessly finished the shot for the two-goal advantage.

Four minutes later Ordonez scored a goal of her own, working her way through several Lady Bronco defenders before tucking away the fourth Prosper goal. Diana and Hailey combined for another goal early in the second half after Ordonez won a breakaway and tapped a pass to Davidson, to take the eventual final score to 5-1. Second half goalkeeper Peyton York was fairly inactive, but did come up with one crucial save at the end of the game to keep Legacy from scoring again. All players on the Lady Eagle roster played in the game, and for the remainder of the match, the team coasted to victory.

Of course, Coach Rafael Flores said he is proud of his girls, and was eager to take on Highland Park in the Regional Final.

“We respect every opponent,” he said.

The two teams will square off at 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton.
