PLANO — A far cry from last week’s dramatic last-second performance, the Prosper High School girls’ soccer team defeated Mesquite Poteet in the second round of playoffs on Friday, March 31, in dominating fashion, with sophomore Diana Ordonez scoring a hat trick to lead her team to a 6-0 victory.

Coach Rafael Flores was eager to get back on the field, as he knew the girls were looking to improve upon last week’s performance against Frisco Heritage.

“We were hoping that our opening playoff game knocked the rust off us as we all knew we didn’t play up to our potential,” Flores said.

Prior to the game, the Poteet Lady Pirates entered the second round having only given up 11 goals all season and were coming off a 3-0 victory against Texas High in the first round of playoffs.

Flores said the girls were anxious to get a quick start on Poteet. The Lady Pirates were in the center circle first for the kickoff, and dropped the ball back to their defensive line. Prosper wasted no time in pressuring the defense, forcing the outside back to commit a dangerous turnover. According to Flores, this set the tempo for the rest of the game. Utilizing this early momentum, senior Gabby Gamboa got on the board first after just two minutes to give her team the lead. A Prosper player sent a long cross into the box, and Gamboa stepped in and intercepted the pass before slotting the ball into the goal. At the six-minute mark, fellow senior Katie Lapomarda cleverly maneuvered her way past the backline and tucked away the second goal. Sophomore Diana Ordonez added to the lead shortly after, allowing Prosper to grab control of the game early on with the 3-0 lead. The team coasted through the rest of the half, as the three-goal advantage carried them into halftime.

In the second, Poteet tried to bounce back offensively by increasing the number of players in their attack. However, the Lady Eagles were eventually able to exploit the absence of defenders and add a pair of Ordonez goals about 20 minutes into the half. Finally, Kristen Knipe finished the scoring with the sixth and final goal of the match, after Ordonez cleverly slipped a cross into the junior. Both goalies, senior Haley Birmingham and junior Peyton York, were relatively inactive, as Flores said they were only called upon to make a few saves during the entire the game. The Prosper back line also had another solid shut-out performance to push their shutout record to 19 games.

“It was a great win, as everyone saw time on the field,” he said.

With the second-round victory, Prosper has now claimed the Area Title, and will move on to play Frisco Centennial in the next round. The Lady Eagles remain undefeated this season, with an overall record of 24-0-1. The game will take place at McKinney Boyd High School on Tuesday, April 4, at 7 p.m.
