On Wednesday Jan. 8, Prosper High School Eagles played host to the visiting Carrollton Creekview High School Mustangs. The Eagles also honored the senior class members of the team before the dual match began. The honorees included Adrian Beltran 126 pounds, Wyatt Payne 152 pounds, Conner Shinners 182 pounds and Tyler Kinney 285 pounds, which have competed for the team all four years of their high school careers. As well as Levi Gerber 220 pounds, a three year team member and Kristin Sneed, a two year team veteran.

The Creekview Mustangs got the night started downing the Eagles in their first three matches, First CHS drew a forfeit at 106 pounds, then won a major decision over Gabe Costa at 113 pounds, 9-0. Alex Siller was next defeated by fall over his opponent in the third period.

The Eagles rebounded and won the next five matches by fall.

Starting at 126 pounds, Adrian Beltran defeated C.Palmer , then at 132 pounds Kyler Barringer defeated C.Flores. Brandon Hologa defeated his opponent at the 4 minute mark of second period at the 138 pounds match, followed by Cason Barnes doing the same at 145 pounds.

At 152 pounds, Wyatt Payne finished the run defeating his challenger in the second period. Freshman Tate Davidson lost his 160 pounds match by fall in the first period. In the next match Devin Regan earned a major decision over his opponent 14-5 for the 170 pounds bout, followed by an exciting performance put on by Conner Shinners at 182 pounds with his 6-1 decision.

After a forfeit at 195 pounds, Levi Gerber and Tyler Kinney both win their 220 pounds and 285 pounds matches by fall over their CHS foes.

The final score for the evening was Prosper Eagles 49 and Creekview Mustangs 28. All five senior Eagles closed their PHS careers with victories defending their home mat.

On Saturday Jan. 11, the Eagles traveled to Wakeland High School in Frisco Texas to participate in the 4A State Team Duals tournament. This was the first year of the tournament and the Wolverines hosted 16 teams from around the state. The competition was strong and area schools were well represented.

The first team that the Eagles faced was area foe, McKinney North High School. At 285 pounds, Tyler Kinney received a forfeit victory, and then North received a forfeit from Prosper at 106 pounds. Next up, Gabe Costa won his 113 pounds match by fall in the second period, followed by Alex Siller’s loss by fall in the second period of his 120 pounds bout.

The Eagles again traded victories at 126 with Adrian Beltran’s win by fall in the first period then dropped the 132 pounds match when Brandon Hologa loss by fall in the first period of his bout. The back and forth continued with Kyler Barringer’s loss in his 138 pounds match followed by Wyatt Payne’s win by fall in the second period of his 145 pounds match.

With six matches to go in the first dual of the day, Prosper was tied with North 24-24.

At 152 pounds, Cason Barnes loses by decision 6-3 followed by another loss by fall at 160 for Tate Davidson. At 170 pounds, Devin Regan won a major decision to close the gap to within 5 team points. North’s lead was extended to eleven team points with Prospers forfeit at 182 pounds.

A total of 12 points needed to win was cut in half when Conner Shinners receives a forfeit for his 195 pounds match. Levi Gerber then set the tone for the day with a pin over his first opponent at 0:19 sec of the first period of his 220 pounds bout. The Eagles came from behind to drop the North Bulldogs 40-39.

Prosper then faced the Rouse Raiders from Leander, Texas. The Eagles again spotted their opponent 6 team points with a forfeit at 106 pounds before Gabe Costa earned a decision win 7-1 in his 113 pounds match. Alex Siller then backed that up with a pin over his opponent in the second period of his 120 pounds bout.

At 126 pounds, Adrian Beltran lost a close decision 4-5 to his foe. Kyler Barringer then lost his 132 pounds match by fall in the first period.

The Eagles bounced back wining the next three matches all by fall, first Brandon Hologa defeated his man in the second period of their 138 pounds match followed quickly by Wyatt Payne’s win by pin in the first of his 145 pounds bout.

At 152 pounds, Cason Barnes won by fall in the second period to extend the team score to 27-15 over the Raiders from Rouse. Sophomore Tate Davidson was defeated by fall in the first period of his 160 pounds match followed by Devin Regan’s 3-1 decision loss at 170 pounds.

Conner Shinners then followed with a win by fall in the third period of his 182 pounds bout. Levi Gerber then trades forfeited victories with Rouse at 195, then at 220.

Tyler Kinney capped off the dual with a victory by fall in the second period of his 285 match. The Eagles defeat Rouse 45-30.

The next match of the day would be a repeat of the week’s earlier match up with District 8 rival Carrollton Creekview. The Ponies were looking for a little payback and quickly jumped out to a 7 point team lead with a decision win at 113 pounds over Gabe Costa and then a major decision over Alex Siller at 120 pounds. Adrian Beltran gets the Eagles on the board with his win by fall in the second, the Eagles then briefly took the lead with Brandon Hologa’s win by decision in his 132 pounds bout.

CHS bounced back a win by fall over Kyler Barringer at 138 pounds in the first period followed by Wyatt Payne’s victory by fall also in the first period of his 145 pounds match. The Eagles again went back and forth with their opponent, first at 152 pounds with a loss by fall for Tate Davidson, then a victory by fall for Cason Barnes at 160 pounds. Devin Regan then lost a heartbreaker decision in triple overtime 10-12 at 170 pounds. CHS was awarded a forfeit victory at 182 pounds, then Conner Shinners wins a close decision 2-0 at 195 followed by another decision win for Levi Gerber at 220 pounds. Tyler Kinney’s win by fall over his opponent in the second gave the Eagles a 33-28 edge over their Creekview foes.

However the Eagles forfeit loss at 106 gave CHS a 34-33 victory.

With the loss, the Eagles finished pool play 2-1 and were eliminated from the championship bracket.

In the consolation bracket, the Eagles faced Georgetown High School. The Eagles went on to defeat GHS 46-27 and finish the tournament 3-1.

For the day, seniors Tyler Kinney, Conner Shinners and Wyatt Payne went undefeated 4-0. With Gabe Costa, Adrian Beltran, Brandon Hologa, Cason Barnes and Levi Gerber each going 3-1.
