The PHS Eagle Wrestling team met the Wakeland Wolverines at PHS on Dec. 18. The Eagles were looking to start the 2013 holiday break with a solid outing against their visiting District 8 rivals. The Eagles came away with a big win over the Wolverines.
The first team points came for WHS, first drawing 6 points for a forfeit at 106 and then another 6 points at 113 pounds pounds against Sophomore Gabe Costa at 5 minutes of the match. However, after jumping out to an early 12-0 lead, Wakeland faced a determined Eagle squad ready for a fight. The Eagles started by rolling off victories in the next seven matches.
At 120, Sophomore Alex Siller wins a major decision over his opponent 17-7, then Kyler Barringer (So), Adrian Beltran (Sr), and Brandon Hologa (Jr) all won by fall (pin) over their Wolverine counterparts at 126, 132 and 138 pounds weight classes. Junior Issac Cordy wins a 7-1 decision at 145 pounds, followed again with wins by seniors Wyatt Payne at 152 and Zack Darr at 160.
After nine matches, the Prosper Eagles are up over Wakeland 37-12. The teams trade victories over the next five matches starting first with the loss by fall to Cason Barnes (So) at 170 pounds at 1:42 of the first period. Next up, Devin Regan (Jr) wins a major decision over his opponent at 182 pounds. Then Cain Brown (Jr) comes up short 15-5 in his 195 pounds match. The team rebounds at 220 pounds with senior Connor Shinners victory by fall at 5 minutes of third period over his Wakeland challenger.
In the final match of the night, Tyler Kinney (Sr) lost his match, in a tough fight, by fall at 5:40 of the third period. In the end, the final score was Prosper Eagles 47, the Wakeland Wolverines 28.
The Eagles next traveled to Tarrant County to participate in the Chisolm Trail tournament on Dec 21st. At 113 pounds, Gabe Costa (So) finished the day 3-2 and took home 4th place. Senior Tyler Kinney earned 3rd place at 285 pounds and went 4-1 for the tournament. At 195 and 220 pounds, fellow seniors, Connor Shinners and Levi Gerber both finish 3-1 and secure 2nd place medals. At 145 pounds., junior Issac Cordy went undefeated, 4-0, for the tournament and earns his first tournament championship. The woman’s squad and the junior varsity squad also competed at the tournament. Earning 3rd place for the women, Sr. Kirstin Sneed went 3-1, and for the JV’s Cason Barnes took home 1st place at 160 pounds.
After a short holiday break, the team traveled south to Frisco to visit the Rangers of Lone Star High School. The Eagles wasted no time and quickly dispatched the Rangers on their home mats. Earning Tech fall victories over their opponents were Gabe Costa at 113 pounds and Conner Shinners at 195 pounds. Winning by fall (pin) over their Ranger victims were Adrian Beltran at 126 pounds, Issac Cordy at 138, Cason Barnes at 152, and Devin Regan at 170 pounds. The depleted Rangers squad was forced to forfeit four matches, starting first at 132 for Kyler Barringer, then at 160 for Tate Davidson, and at 220 for Levi Gerber and finally at 285 for Tyler Kinney. The Eagles only suffered two losses on the evening. First at 120 pounds Alex Siller loses by fall at 1:20 of the first period of his match and then Wyatt Payne is felled at 5:38 minutes of third period of his 145 pounds match. The final score was Prosper Eagles 58 and Lone Star Rangers 12.
On the final weekend of the holiday break, the team traveled to Allen Texas to take part in the Texas Outlaw tournament. The tournament is one of the premier events in the area with some of the best programs from here and beyond competing, teams from as far west as Nevada, and as far north as Kansas and Oklahoma came for the two day event. The Eagles placed 14th out of 29 teams, and were the third highest 4A team to place in the tournament. The three highest placing Eagles included Issac Cordy placing eighth at 138 pounds and going 4-4 in the tournament, then placing fifth, both Conner Shinners at 182 going 4-3 and Tyler Kinney at 285 going 5-3.
