The Prosper High wrestling team traveled to The Colony on Thursday, Jan. 16 to face their district rival Cougars. After a hard-fought match, the Eagles lost to the district rivals. But the Eagles bounced back to take second place in a tournament in Rockwall.

The Eagles are 4-1 in district duals, and recently went 3-1 at the 4A State Team Duals hosted by Frisco Wakeland High. The 2013-2014 season is drawing towards an end and the team dual Thursday night was the last district event prior to the District 8 tournament, to be hosted by Prosper High school, Jan. 24-25. Prosper coach Darren Snyder has said Proper’s district is one of the toughest in the North Texas area. Of the 56 wrestlers to represent the region in last year’s State tournament, 33 (60%) came out of District 8.

The Eagles began the night right, first with senior Conner Shinners wrestling at 182 pounds quickly dispatching his opponent by fall. Levi Gerber also dropped his Cougar opponent. After two matches, The Eagles were up against the Colony 12-0. The lead though was short lived. The Eagles forfeited two matched, the first at 220 pounds and the next at 106. Sandwiched in-between, a hard fought match for Tyler Kinney at 285 pounds was taken to the very last second before the match was lost by fall at 5:59.

The Cougars lead Prosper High after 5 bouts 18-12.

Next up, sophomore Gabe Costa outlasted his opponent to win by decision 10-8 in his 113 pounds match. At 120 though, Alex Siller lost in the second period of his match. A tech fall win for Adrian Beltran at 126 pounds helped close the team score gap and got the Eagles to within 4. However, that would be as close as the Eagles would get to retaking the lead.

The Eagles dropped the 132 and 138 pounds matches with both Kyler Barringer and Brandon Hologa losing by fall in the first period of those matches. Wyatt Payne tied to ignite a spark with his first period pin during his 145 pound match. The momentum was carried over into Cason Barnes 152 pounds match with his major decision win 12-2 over his opponent.

With two matches to go, the Eagles pulled within 6 to the Cougars 36-30. The rally, however, was cut short as the Eagles split the last two matches with The Colony.

In his first varsity match, Robbie Wudeck lost by fall at 1:34 of the first period to the Region 2 defending Champion. In the final match of the night junior Devin Regan defeated his 170 pound opponent by fall.

The Eagles fell to the Colony 42-36. With the loss, the team’s district record for the season is 4-2, 7-3 overall.

In the final weekend before the district tournament, the Eagles traveled to Rockwall to take part in the Jacket Classic tournament. The Eagles scored 137.5 team points earning themselves second place in the tournament.

Several PHS wrestlers placed individually at the meet:

First Place — Gabe Costa at 113 pounds, and Levi Gerber at 220 pounds.
