From Staff Reports
On Saturday, Sept. 7, Prosper High School will host its second annual Eagle Cross Country Invitational and 5K Fun Run benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). The event will be held at Myers Park in McKinney, with 14 high schools in the 5A and below divisions expected to attend. Event organizers anticipate several hundred runners from the North Texas area to participate with even more spectators, family members, and coaches supporting the event.
Earl Young, the kickoff speaker for the races, is an Olympic gold medalist and a blood cancer survivor. He is vocal about his cancer fight and looks forward to sharing his experiences with the students and administration, who are so dedicated to raising money for LLS and its mission to find a cure for blood cancers.
Among Young’s many athletic accolades, he was the Olympic and World record-holder for the United States in the 1600 meter relay on the 1960 United States Olympic Track and Field team. Young earned All-American recognition in Track and Field, represented the United States on the 1963 Pan American team as well as numerous international teams, and ran on relay teams that set four American and World records.
