The Prosper Eagles basketball team has one game left in the first half of the district schedule and with a 4-1 record in district play, is excited about the second half opportunities.

Prosper had its first district loss last week, losing to Frisco 67-63. Coach Jonathan Ellis said the Raccoons are a good team, especially at home. Plus, the Eagles dug themselves a pretty deep hole to start the game.

"They jumped out to a 13 – 0 lead to start the game with some hot shooting to put us in a hole early. I was proud of our team for fighting back and making a game of it, but they [The Raccoons] hit the timely shots down the stretch to win the game," Ellis said.

Prosper also held off a feisty Frisco Liberty team last Tuesday for a 36-35 win. The Eagles were scheduled to play first-place Frisco Heritage on Tuesday night of this week (the game was played after the Prosper Press deadline). Heritage is also the state’s No. 8 ranked team. Ellis said his team was excited about the opportunity to play the Coyotes.

"[It’s] another tough place to play on the road, but the kids are really excited about the opportunity to play the No. 8 team in the state," Ellis said. "It should be a fast-paced, high scoring game as both teams like to get up and down the floor."

Prosper has had a solid season so far with a 15-3 record and the 4-1 district mark. Ellis believes it was the pre-district games that gave them a competitive step up.

"Unlike last year, we played a very competitive non-district schedule this year, which seems to have prepared us well for the tough district grind," he said.

Heritage leads the district race so far with Prosper sitting in second place, but five more teams (Frisco, Centennial, Liberty, Wakeland and The Colony) could emerge for one of the four playoff spots during the second half of the district schedule.

Ellis likes his team’s chances though.

"Our team understands that in a tough district like ours, we need to just focus on one game at a time. There are no nights ‘off’ in District 9-4A. If our boys keep improving and working hard each day, I’m confident we will find ourselves in a good spot at the end of district play," Ellis said.

This Friday, the Eagles will host Centennial to round out the first half of the district schedule. Next Tuesday, the Eagles will host Frisco Wakeland. Prosper beat Wakeland 42-41 in a squeaker in December.
