From Staff Reports

The PHS Concert Bands achieved high ratings at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest last week, held at the Allen Performing Arts Center at Allen High School.

The Wind Ensemble Varsity Band performed on Friday, April 19, and received a "Superior" rating – the highest rating possible – from all judges. This was the ninth year in a row for the varsity band to receive this top "Superior" rating in UIL competition.

The Wind Symphony Non-Varsity Band performed on Wednesday, April 17, and also received a "Superior" rating for their stage performance. The band received an "Excellent" rating from their sightreading performance.

The Concert performance consists of three pieces of music that have been prepared and refined to perform on stage. In sightreading, the band is given seven minutes to verbally review a selection of music that the band has never seen before. They are then expected to perform this new piece of music at a very high level. Both portions of the contest are performed in front of a panel of three judges who are highly regarded high school and college band directors from around the entire state.
