GROW Local South Texas Presents Birds in the Urban Garden

Workshop

Free event filled with birding, gardening, art and more

Grow Local South Texas will host a free event, Birds in the Urban Garden, on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at The Learning Garden, 3808 Up River Rd. This event is dedicated to providing education about our Urban Bird species in a fun, family friendly environment. In addition to educational presentations, the event will also incorporate art, gardening and bird watching activities.

During the event, educational presentations will include “Birding in Corpus Christi” presented by The Audubon Outdoor Club and “Planting for Native Birds” presented by Christy Ilfrey of NativeDave.com. Many of the bird attracting plants described in the presentations will then be planted around The Learning Garden. There will also be bird themed arts & crafts activities for children as well as a station to make Pollinator Seed Balls that will attract important pollinators like hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.

Birds in the Urban Garden is made possible with grant funding and educational materials from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Celebrate Urban Birds Mini-Grant. Citizen Science Urban Bird Watching activities will take place throughout the event, providing The Cornell Lab of Ornithology with important information about Corpus Christi’s urban bird populations.

This grant is designed to bring the arts, gardening, community participation, and citizen science projects to urban green spaces. As part of this grant, Grow Local South Texas will be distributing 50 Bilingual Celebrate Urban Birds Citizen Science packets during the event. These packets will allow participants to record their citizen science birdwatching activity and report the data back to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Packets also include a colorful poster, gardening information, seeds and more.

Birds in the Urban Garden is a free, family friendly educational event. For more information on this event or any of Grow Local South Texas’ educational programming, please visit http://growlocalstx.com/
