BILLINGS, Mont. -- Wayland Baptist knocked off the No. 1 team, and now the Flying Queens are within three victories of becoming No. 1 themselves.

Sophomore center Deborah VanDijk had 19 points and 12 rebounds Friday night, and three teammates joined her in double digits as Wayland upset top-ranked Shawnee State 79-69 in the women's basketball NAIA Tournament round of 16.

Senior guard Jada Riley had 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists, junior guard Maci Merket scored 13 and senior guard Gabby Gonzales from Coronado had 11 as the Flying Queens joined the Wayland men's team in both advancing to the national quarterfinals. The Flying Queens will play at 9 p.m. CDT Saturday against No. 2 seed Vanguard (24-5), a 63-55 winner against No. 3 seed Carroll in Friday's last round-of-16 game.

Shawnee State (31-4) lost for the first time in 27 games. Shawnee State, from Portsmouth, Ohio, became the second No. 1 seed to exit, following Campbellsville that lost earlier Friday to Montana Western, a No. 4 seed. The Bears dodged a first-round upset, rallying past 8-seed Grand View 88-82, but there was no escaping the 4-seed Flying Queens.

Wayland led most of the game and outscored Shawnee State 26-18 in the fourth quarter. The game was tied 64-64 with three minutes before the Flying Queens made a 12-0 over the next 2 1/2 minutes. VanDijk and Riley each had a three-point play and five points during the run. VanDijk's three-point play put Wayland ahead 67-64 with 2:51 left and Riley's bucket, foul and free throw made it 74-64 with 44 seconds to go.

Shallowater graduate Morgan Bennett capped the run with two free throws. She finished with six assists.

Hannah Miller led the Bears with 22 points, and Bailey Cummins was next with 15.

Sophomore guard Kendrick Clark added nine points and 11 rebounds for Wayland.

The Flying Queens made first-round exits in each of their previous six NAIA Tournament trips. They're in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003, trying to make the NAIA Fab Four for the first time since 1992.
