Almost one year since Initiative Cheer became Prosper Athletics, the Sapphires have qualified for a Division 2 bid to compete for the Championship title in Disney World during the May 12 - 14 weekend. The gym, which consisted of only nine girls when taken over by current owners, Andrea McHenry and Cara Sorensen, is now composed of four teams with 40 girls.

During its first full season as Prosper Athletics, the Sapphires conquered all odds to win a bid at the NCA Oklahoma Classic. The team’s division is decided through a combination of age and skill.

The Sapphire’s ages range from seven to 12. Most of the girls reside in Prosper with two girls traveling from Frisco and one from Celina to train with the team. There are 15 total athletes within the Sapphires’ squad.

“Words can’t express how proud we are of these young athletes,” said Prosper Athletics owner Andrea McHenry. “The amount of hard work it takes at this age is more than we could ever ask from this group of girls. Every ounce of blood, sweat and tears that they have poured into this routine has more than earned them a bid to summit. It has earned them a place in the hearts of this community.”

They will be competing against teams from all around the world. The team that makes it to Sunday of the competition and wins gets championship rings. Hours and hours of hard work have gone into making it this far and the Sapphires are excited to see what happens next. Tryouts for the 2017/2018 season begins in May and Prosper Athletics offers from show team to level five.
