MCKINNEY — Baylor Scott & White Medical Center — McKinney received an “A” rating for hospital safety by The Leapfrog Group — a group that assesses hospital safety. The designation is one of the hospital industry’s elite benchmarks of patient safety and quality care.

The annual survey assesses hospital safety, quality, and efficiency based on national performance measures that are of specific interest to health care purchasers and consumers. The measures also provide hospitals with the opportunity to benchmark their progress in improving the safety, quality and efficiency of care they deliver. To earn this award demands leadership, teamwork and dedication to patients.

According to Leapfrog data and analysis from John Hopkins Medicine’s Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, B, C, D and F hospitals have higher risk of avoidable death than their A counterparts. In fact, there is a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death in B hospitals, 35 percent higher in C and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals. Additionally, roughly 33,440 lives could be saved if all hospitals had the same performance as “A.”

Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care. The flagship Leapfrog Hospital Survey collects and transparently reports hospital performance, empowering purchasers to find the highest-value care and giving consumers the lifesaving information they need to make informed decisions. The Hospital Safety Score, Leapfrog’s other main initiative, assigns letter grades to hospitals based on their record of patient safety, helping consumers protect themselves and their families from errors, injuries, accidents, and infections. Leapfrog works under the guidance of the seven-member Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel to select measures and develop a scoring methodology.
