Girls 5 to 17 years old and their families are invited to learn more about the almost 100-year heritage of Girl Scouts and how they can be a part of the "girl-led" organization. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at B. McDaniel Middle School.

"Girl Scouts is the premiere leadership organization for girls!" states a press release from the local Girl Scout organization. "'Girl-led' means girls take charge, in partnership with committed volunteers, to make decisions and discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls teaming together in a supportive, nurturing environment. Today, the Girl Scout movement encompasses nearly three million girls and adults."

For almost 100 years, the Girl Scout program has provided educational opportunities for girls to participate in outdoor activities, the arts, science and technology. There are many ways girls can participate in Girl Scouting. Most girls are members of a troop that meets on a regular basis. These troops consist of girls and adults who offer support and encouragement, helping each girl reach her greatest potential, the press release states.

"If you have been thinking about incorporating something new into your routine that's both exciting and meaningful... become a Girl Scout volunteer," the press release states. "We can accommodate the busiest schedule. The satisfaction you'll gain from seeing young girls grow into confident, successful women will make you wonder why you didn't volunteer with Girl Scouts before."
