The Eagles played Argyle last week for the top spot in the district. After a back-and-forth battle between the state's No. 24 Prosper Eagles and No. 19 Argyle Eagles, Prosper came out with a 51-43 win to take over the driver's seat in the district race.
Coach Greg Nix said the Argyle win was big for his program because, "it's district and they are one of those state-known programs."
Senior Dejuan Carter agreed that the win was big.
"Last year we went to their house and they beat us by 40. Came back to our house and won by 11. This win shows that we are the real deal this year," said Carter, who chipped in 18 points to lead the Eagles against Argyle.
Carter also had a big three-pointer to put the game away for Prosper.
"I just knew that we needed to make a shot. We needed to score. The game was close. I did my best. I had an open shot. I just put it in," Carter said.
The Eagles are in first place for possibly the first time ever in district basketball. And after a 73-55 win over Celina Friday night, the team is 7-0 in district play with just five games to play.
"Were just happy to have a seat," Nix said. "We are taking it one game at a time, one game at a time. In this region once the playoffs start anybody can beat anybody."
Region 2 is a competitive basketball area. The state's top-ranked Madison is from Region 2.
But the team is poised to make another playoff appearance and hopes to take advantage last year's experience.
Nix said he feels good about this team and thinks they have something special.
"I do feel that about this group," he said. "We are stressing the point of not becoming to overconfident because that's when someone will pop you."
In spite of the team's winnings ways, Nix thinks the team still has some room to get even better. The team struggled with shooting against Argyle and still found a way to win.
"We have been a little off for two or three games now. We always talk about having to win games in other areas and you never know as a player when it might be your turn to step up an help the team win," Nix said.
Has the team peaked this season?
"I sure hope not," he said. "I think we still have some great basketball ahead of us but we do go on the road four out of the last five district games.
