Library Event Draws a Crowd
From Staff Reports
Roger Flood welcomed the nearly forty adults and children gathered at the Prosper Community Library on Saturday morning for the Football in Texas program. After introducing the Friends of Prosper Community Library program, Flood highlighted some Texas football statistics before turning to the two former NFL /AFL players who told the large group of children and interested parents what football life was like in the 60's and the 80's, and give some advice to the youngsters.
Lloyd Pate, a tight end with the Buffalo Bills in 1962, enlightened everyone on the reality of life in the upstart new league. He played with some famous names, including Jack Kemp, former Senator and vice-presidential candidate, at quarterback, and Cookie Gilchrist at fullback. Danny Wilson talked about his time with Green Bay in 1984 following a great college career at Oklahoma. Wilson is currently part of the scouting staff for the Oakland Raiders, while managing his local businesses and his Town Council commitments. His remarks about the advantages of developing an athletic future through participation in a variety of sports and outside play were a surprise to some. Wilson also emphasized the need for concentrating on achieving high grades in school, and the needed discipline to respect home duties, and present a polite demeanor to the outside world. This received a strong positive response from parents.
Zack Neely, a sophomore defensive tackle, represented the Prosper High School football team, and related his background in football and the work involved in conditioning to be able to participate in the Prosper program. In response to a question, Neely highlighted the occasional parental push he receives to reach his maximum potential in his subjects, and is currently carrying a straight A average.
Prosper football coach Kent Scott added comments about Neely, and advised that Zach had been awarded Honorable Mention for his defensive play by the State selection committee.
Flood closed the gathering by highlighting football related books available at the Library, and encouraged those present to take advantage of this local opportunity. Fourteen new Patrons joined the Library during this morning activity.
