PHS Band Hosts UIL Contest

Submitted

The Prosper High School Mighty Eagle Band recently hosted the Region 25 North Zone UIL Solo & Ensemble Contest at the new Prosper High School. Approximately 1400 high school band students from all over the region were present. Among schools represented were S & S Consolidated, Celina, Gunter, Pottsboro, Whitesboro, Princeton, Lovejoy, Van Alstyne, Anna, Melissa and big schools Sherman, Denison and Allen.

At this competition individuals and small groups prepare selections of music and perform in front of one judge for a rating. Judges ratings are scored on a scale from 1st division "Superior" rating through 5th division "Poor" rating.

The Eagle Band Students and Parents hosted this contest by setting up 17 different performing rooms with pianos provided by the region, acting as check-in points for performing students, providing a concessions area for the performing students, providing a hospitality area for the judges and visiting band directors and making sure everything was put back in order after this eight hour musical marathon.

At the end of the day, nineteen Eagle Band Members had performed top rated solos. Solos earning a top rating with the hardest difficulty level earn students the privilege of advancing to the state level when those solos are performed by memory. This year, seven Eagle Band Members will perform at the state level.

Ensemble events are performed by groups of three or more members. Ensembles earning a top rating with the hardest difficulty level music earn that group the privilege of performing at the state level. This year, 20 ensemble members will perform at the state level.

Students who earned a first division rating on a solo are: Liz Burkett, Avary Thoreson, Kristin Alt, Jared Vazquez (advances to state), Tyler Stang, Zack Crosby (advances to state), Corinne Brosey, Melissa Foster, Natalie Upton, Alex Goldberg, Rachel Havens, Josh Torres, Jared Holland, Eion Zink (advances to state), Flint Loughridge (advances to state) Alex Crovella (advances to state), Johann Gerdts, Coreena Gulick (advances to state), Nick Rhodes (advances to state).
